  • Field recordings are made irregularly and without any real agenda at present. I am interested in the idea of collecting ambient sounds from places I have been much like photographs. I am also interested in the idea of a variety of "silences" brought together in one place.

All recordings are made using the built-in mic on an iPhone and are an average length of +/- 30". They are presented with location and date and represent simply a slice of the natural ambient sound at these places on these days.

    River Lune, October 16 2016

Sunday morning birdwatching walk with Edward, having spotted goosander, greylag and bean goose, goldeneye and grey wagtail. Water movement in the shallows on an autumn morning. My old friend reminded me that John Cage had described this sound as “applause with gongs”.

Recorded at Newent Lake, Gloucestershire at dusk on 12.04.12. Amateur campanology, wildfowl and evening songbirds colliding very beautifully. At around the 00:29 mark if you listen very carefully you can hear a grey heron take off and fly down the length of the lake. I was about 2 metres from this.

    Downtown Stuttgart, 6am, April 2011

I was woken by this in Stuttgart last week, and it kind of moved me. In the few seconds following waking I found the presence of mind to turn the recording device in my phone on, but listening back I think I would really have preferred to play guitar along to this for a while.
